proceeded through Pasadena to Hollywood. The houses are built in Spanish style, with most beautiful gardens — bougainvillea and oleander were in profusion everywhere. We arrived at the Jones' house which was small but quite attractive. It was arranged that Baba, Meredith, and myself should stay in the Jones' house; next door Malcolm, Kaka, and Adi; and at a small hotel, The Mission Hotel, were Jean, Margaret Starr, and the rest of the party.

"Finally we all had some lunch and tried to get used to our new and strange surroundings. Soon after our arrival, the crowd of photographers and reporters arrived and there was the usual commotion. That night a reception was given to Baba; mostly clergymen and pupils of Mark Jones' who runs a school of philosophy. They all seemed very interested and kind, but out of them all the only one that appealed and radiated affection was Celeste.

"Before going to bed, Baba called me into his room and spelt on the board "I am not happy here" He seemed restless and ill at ease. To make matters increasingly difficult, Meredith took it into his head that he wanted to sleep in Baba's room. This, I know, was absolutely against Baba's wish, as he took me aside and told me so, but to humor him he allowed him to do so for two nights. One drive was to Beverly Hills, the residential section of Hollywood, where many film stars have estates. Baba was anxious to make contact as quickly as possible with the cinema world and it did not seem as if he could wait. He was restless and walked about snapping his fingers and fidgeting generally.

"Unfortunately Anna May Wong and Betty Blythe whom I knew well were away, but towards evening I got in touch with May Beatty and her daughter. She is an Australian who plays grande dame parts. May was very anxious to come and see Baba and visited him that evening. Immediately a sympathetic chord was struck and they talked intimately for some time. Baba told me that the first link was made with the film world, and he seemed less restless and more satisfied. The next day, May 31st, Baba visited Paramount Studios where he was shown over by some of the directors. As usual, Meredith and Margaret ran like hens after corn to their places on each side of him. Meredith on these expeditions generally wore a mackintosh and grasped a badly furled umbrella, although the sun was blazing!
