Bankhead, Gary Cooper, and Charles Laughton. I had known Tallulah in London and also Charles Laughton and so was able to present them to Baba, and they in turned introduced Gary Cooper. We watched a scene or two being shot and it was arranged that I should call back later in the afternoon for Tallulah who wished to come and have a private interview with Baba at the Jones' house. In the afternoon we visited the Metro-Goldwyn Studios and went to see one scene being shot in which Lewis Stone was acting. Then Baba met Virginia Bruce, who has subsequently become the third wife of John Gilbert. They were photographed together, but we never saw the proofs. We were shown some of the sets of "Mata Hari" which Greta Garbo had only just finished.

“From there we went to the Fox Film Studios where Tom Mix was doing scenes. He was presented to Baba and we also saw his famous horse. That completed the Film Studios for that day and I returned to Paramount to fetch Tallulah, who had an interview with Baba at 5:30. She came and stayed with him a long time. That night she was going to see Greta Garbo, and was going to talk to her of Baba.

“The next day (Tuesday), Florence Vidor, the wife of Jascha Heifetz, came to see Baba. There were many interviews that day, and in the evening we went to a reception given by Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks at Pickfair in honor of Baba. Mark Jones drove Baba, Meredith, Priscilla, Margaret, and myself to Beverly Hills. He missed the way, and went much astray, so that all the rest of our party arrived before we did. There were only a very few people invited to meet Baba, amongst them were Gary Cooper, Charles Farrell, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Lottie Pickford, and a lady who writes Mary Pickford's scenarios (I cannot remember her name). Also there was the Countess Dentice di Frasso.

“Baba spent the greater part of the evening with Mary Pickford and then later talked individually with the others for a short rime; also he had a private talk with Douglas Fairbanks. We were there about 2½ hours. Douglas Fairbanks was a very charming host. I had not seen him for years, but he remembered me. He wore a blue velvet smoking jacket. It was arranged that Mary Pickford should come and visit Baba. She had for a long time been studying Eastern Philosophy with a very remarkable man, Allen Boone.

"During this visit to Pickfair, Baba gave the following message to Beverly Hills:

"I was particularly glad to come to California because of the opportunity which it afforded to contact those who made or appeared in the moving pictures, and I am delighted that this gathering could be arranged for tonight.

"I do not need to tell you, who are engaged in the production and dis tribution of moving pictures, what a power you hold in your hands; nor do I doubt that you are fully alive to the responsibility which the wielding of that powerinvolves.
