another saint and asked him the meaning of this. He said: 'It meant you have to long for Union intensely, as if you could not live another moment without it, and yet have the patience of billions of years.'

The longing is of God; so too is the grace. You do as I say. Have that longing and I will help you in that longing, because it is all me. I give from here (the heart) and I receive from there (pointing to our hearts).

Love in its highest aspect is God.

Some Sayings of Shri Meher Baba

Meher Ashram, Nasik, May 3, 1937

  • Be bound by freedom. Be attached to detachment. That means have desires — but be their Master and not their slave.
  •

  • Catch but be not caught. Like putting on a coat when you feel cold and being free to take it off when you feel hot.
  •

If you put boiling milk into a glass it breaks, but if you put in a spoon it absorbs the heat, the glass does not break and you then take out the spoon and the milk is poured out hot. The glass does not break and the spoon is removed.

  • What is sickness, what is death, but Maya's glimpses. Die before death and you live forever.
  •

  • Love in its highest aspect is God.
  •

  • Everything you do put your mind to it and then forget it, but do not be attached to it.
  •

    (undated ):

  • The habit of criticizing our fellow-beings is a bad one, at the back of it often lies self-righteousness, conceit and a false sense of superiority. Sometimes it indicates envy or a desire for retaliation. Those who criticize should first look to themselves. They will find greater faults within themselves than in others.
  •

  • You only keep that which you let go. You have already lost a thing when you feel you have to hold it.

  • Do everything but don't worry. Worrying binds. When one is beyond worrying, one is happy. But you must consciously not worry. The stone does not worry, but unconsciously. It is all fun, a game, happiness — if you don't worry.
  •

The moth loves perfectly. It does not mind being consumed. It has no thought of self.

  • What a vast illusion! Millions of worlds, tiny and huge ones. There are no Perfect Masters in the other worlds. Four of these other worlds are inhabited. One of them is like this earth, but with different types of forms. Little forms. Only this world (earth) has Masters and realized souls.
  •

These worlds are very near yet very far; when you understand the principle it will be clear how near everything is and yet how far away. The other worlds are connected with this world, not actually, but they are.

  • Tiger is Baba. Everything is Baba. If you see only the form — it is a tiger. If you see the inner soul — it is Baba. Why be afraid of Baba?
