smelling flowers around his neck, touching his feet or his hands or even his sadra. Baba's men disciples had to form a hand to hand ring around Baba so that he could move forward. We saw so many touching incidents. We saw people humbly prostrate themselves at Baba's feet, young mothers holding their babes forth for Baba to touch. There was one old lady that had a tray, a camphor lamp and the various ingredients for performing the arti ceremony in front of Baba. Baba doesn't encourage ceremonies, but if the people wish to do it and it means something to them, he sometimes permits it. So, this old lady was trying to get near Baba, but the crowd was so thick she had no chance whatever. I could see the look of desperation on her face. There she was, a helpless old lady, how could she get through that crowd. It looked as though Baba would go by and not even see her, but at the last moment he stopped, waved his hand for the people to move aside, and to her great surprise and relief she found herself face to face with the Avatar. He motioned her to approach him. She couldn't believe her own good fortune but she started to perform the Arti ceremony. She had to light this lamp. She was so nervous she dropped her matches. She hastily stooped down to pick them up, looking up to see if he was going to wait. Baba smiled his reassurance. Limply, she managed to light the little camphor lamp and, waving the tray in front of Baba, sang the arti. Very, very beautiful. Baba continued smiling, radiating his love; love glancing here, love glancing there. There were so many beautiful scenes that day. I was walking with the late, distinguished American poet, Malcolm Schloss, some of the time, and we just looked at each other and said, "It's incredible, just incredible". On that occasion I felt that Meher Baba, the Christ, became merged with Lord Krishna. He seemed a combination of both. To the Hindu he appears more like Krishna. Whatever one's religious background is, one sees him in the light of that background. He said at one time, "Whatever they take me to be, that I am".

We went with him to the lowly homes of the poor, the `untouchables', and we saw him embrace them. We noticed that when he embraced them he did not burden them with our type of sympathy. I felt a sympathy for those poor people, but I realized then that my sympathy would have been a burden to them. This is not what he gave them. He gave them the joy of uplifting love, which he has for all beings, so they were really uplifted, He came to them on their own level, as he comes to each one of us on our own level, no matter what it is.

Not only when we meet him physically, but in the spirit, we must never be afraid or timid to come to Baba. No matter what our feelings, no matter what our failures, no matter what our achievements, let nothing interfere with our coming to him and surrendering all to him, relinquishing all. He knows us on our own level,
