A LETTER FROM NASIK

Meher Retreat, Nasik, India, April 3rd, 1937

Dear Miss Wallace,

Baba received your letter of 8th March, conveying your greetings to Him. He is always happy at the approach of everyone whose mind and thoughts turn toward Him for it is through heart and mind and soul that He reaches out in the Silence — even also to those who do not know of him mentally and have not met Him physically.

We who love Him are made so happy when we do what John Bass has done in your case. You can well understand that. Having received the Grace of the Master, that essence of love and sweetness of soul and invigoration of heart and mind — inwardly ― there is no greater happiness than to reflect the light to another.

Baba's universal work for all humanity continues always. Everyone who, like Him, has become One in Consciousness and Being with the Infinite Being and Love, attains at that moment the same realization with each individual soul and the life behind every separate form, all of whom enshrine the One Life. Nevertheless, the work is not finished until the union is fully conscious on both sides until the awakening, of which you speak in your letter, occurs.

Yet John Bass has struck a note that has awakened your mind. How can heart and soul be awakened? Who can effect that but one who is fully awakened on the inner planes? One who does that hastens evolution. But until the seeker sees the need and feels the need for that next step, it is really wiser not to come to a Master, but to remain working out the preliminary stages through which humanity as a whole is passing. The quickened process disturbs the old equilibrium, otherwise how could it be accelerated; and unless there is deep need and feeling, there is no anchor whereby the awakening consciousness can steady the power that is produced by the contact with the Master.

Now Baba's principal medium is Divine Love manifesting on all the planes of consciousness. His agents on the physical plane use physical means but the power is from him; similarly on the subtle and mental planes (which are open in some degree to a few developed beings). He works those "finer and hidden parts of Nature corresponding to the subtle and mental bodies of man." "So long as man's consciousness functions through physical senses only, which are not adapted for perceiving those aspects of Nature finer than the gross (physical), the subtle and mental worlds remain to such a person — other worlds," but they are not really so, as they all interpenetrate. (See appendix p.4, Baba’s pamphlet on Meditation and the Divine Theme.)

I am sure you would get great help from reading that pamphlet which is available from John Bass, I think. If not, I will have one sent to you from London and you may feel I drawn then to practice the simple comprehensive, regular, systematic consideration of the whole subject which Baba has prepared, certainly the very best I have ever seen during 30 years' searching.

Another pathway is just to think of Baba and love Him and thus make the contact with Him inwardly. He tells us that the balance of head and heart is the ideal way approach to Truth.

He gave me your letter in order that I might send you the reply and explain a little the method followed by Him. By this means He establishes an individual and vital and interior contact with everyone who turns to Him wherever they are. For the unconscious masses of humanity He has other methods of approach whereby His Love and Care help their development toward mankind's ultimate inevitable goal.
