a quite different scene—pandemonium! Then Baba smilingly sent for everyone to come to him and the order went forth—each to bring his own cup and plate and all to sit on the floor! Of this day Will wrote in the Meher Baba Journal:

"It was a memorable day in that quiet valley when Baba arrived with a large party of devotees from London and the place was alive with animation and happiness as they approached the garden path to enter the house with Baba as center of the animated group. Coming up the pathway Baba was first seen alone, turning the corner of the house to enter in at the open doorway of the largest room, that was soon filled to overflowing with upturned faces from happy travelers on the floor, stairway, chairs, etc. Each in turn, as is the Master's custom, came up to him for some special message or blessing and he spelt out on his board: "This is my home.' "

A friend of Margaret Craske, who visited the Backetts in London, made an illuminating comment on them to the effect that many persons love Baba but seem to think of themselves in relation to Baba—while the Backetts just thought of Baba. Consequently their house seemed full of Baba warmth.

This was a memorable visit of Baba to England in 1933. The night before he left, he said we had drawn closer to him and understood better his ways of working. He also said—(in relation to our having rented a large hall in London on a certain date)—“Did you really think I would speak on a definite date in a large hall before a crowd of people? I went into silence without giving warning and I will speak in the same way—but when I speak the whole world will know and recognize who I am."

At Nasik

Will and Mary were called to India with about twenty of us from the West in December 1936. Their outward contribution to the life of the Ashram was that of peace-makers. They were witness at times to turbulent waters that flowed above and underground, but were never partakers, they just carried on with the tasks assigned by Baba while trying to adapt themselves to a rather difficult climate. Neither of them was over-strong, and neither young, but rarely a complaint passed their lips. There was no asking for favors or special treatment.

Will continued his daily three hours of correspondence and office work and shared in the great event of preparing for Meher Baba's birthday celebration to which thousands came.
