Thirty Years in The Service of Meher Baba,

 

1932-1962

BOTH MY DEAR ARCHANGELS WILL AND MARY HAVE COME TO ME FOR ALL TIME. ― BABA

 

 

Meher Baba wishes that his followers in the East and the West, particularly those who did not meet Will and Mary Backett personally, should know about these two dedicated disciples. Perhaps because they met Baba for the first time in 1932 in my parents' home in London and for the next few years the Backetts and I were among those who worked together in Baba’s cause, he has now asked me to contribute this article.

 

Mani, Baba's sister, in her letter from India dated 8th September, 1962, wrote to me at Myrtle Beach, S.C., regarding Mary Backett, who passed away some months before her husband, Will:

 

"On the 6th of September, 1962, there arrived a cable from my brother Adi in England, informing Baba of darling Mary's passing away."

 

Next morning Baba had an express cable sent to Will Backett as follows:

 

MY ARCHANGEL MARY HAS COME TO ME AFTER FULFILLING HER APPOINTED TASK. BE HAPPY IN MY LOVE.—BABA

 

Mani continued, "Next year would have been their golden anniversary and I was looking forward to the special cable that would have gone from Baba and Meherazad. But as I wrote to Will, although it is such a deep personal loss to him, it is a gain for Mary and a victory for both his dearest archangels in his love."

 

A week or so later Will wrote to me at Myrtle Beach from his home in London:

 

"I am greatly privileged and blessed to have shared her company for fifty years, and the inner meaning of her life and the lives of other lovers of Beloved is enshrined in His Universal heart that embraces also the Universe and Beyond—Beyond.

 

"I am living on here for the present—five rooms for one person, and will see how I can manage the winter."

 

During the following eight months dear Will, in very poor health, did
